Snail mail is mailing a letter or card instead of sending a text, email or message on Facebook or Twitter.
Why, you ask, why would you do this? It’s so expensive; it’s time consuming, its old fashioned!
Call me old fashioned but I think It’s amazing!
I have to admit, I do not do this nearly as much as I use to but I’m working on getting back to this!
I know people who are very artistic and their cards/letters are super colorful and are such a joy to get! I know people who are like me and have no artistic abilities whatsoever and their cards/letters are such a joy to get!
Do you see it… Cards and letters A R E such a JOY to get!
Here are some reasons why you should send/give Cards and/or letters as often as you can.
- It makes a difference. Seriously! This is one of the best and easiest ways of Spreading Joy I know! You will make their day brighter!
- They can enjoy it over and over again. Many will. Someone dealing with a chronic illness will keep the card close as it is an encouragement to them! It will encourage their heart day after day!
- It will flood your heart with great joy! I know….. greedy of me to send you a card isn’t it, but I promise you, it’s true. Any time we are doing something for someone else, your heart is warmed by it.
- An amazing Ministry – many people feel that they don’t have gifts, talents etc. You can have an encouragement ministry – especially to the sick, elderly and even the everyday, ordinary people that just need some encouragement. It’s a great way to minister to those in your world.
- Are you artistic? Do you know calligraphy? Lucky you! You can use all those amazing art supplies, colorful pens and stationary that I know you are hording!
- Sending cards and letters is like sending Love and HUGS in the mail! Especially for kids and others you don’t get to see often. My children don’t live near me anymore so I try to mail them things often and I honestly feel like I mail them love and hugs when I send them cards.
- Sending a card/letter to someone reminds them that they matter, that they are important and that makes a huge difference to people.
- With all the junk mail in your mail box, wouldn’t be exciting to find something fun? Think of that as you send off your letter to someone.
- You can turn a normal day into an extraordinary day with one stamp. Priceless
- Small children home? Write to them. Let them get it, open it and enjoy it – and then have a special place where you put it for them to keep. An album, one of those cute book boxes or treasure boxes. Before you know it they will be 25 and this will be such a gift.
What are some other reasons you can think of to send a letter? Do you send snail mail? Do you reach out to people other than just Christmas?
Do you decorate your envelopes with Envelope art? Ohhhh to be able to do that!

I love getting mail! It’s always so fun. It’s a shame that so few people still send mail!
Exactly Kay! I had ordered myself a dvd and it came this week – as I got the package I exclaimed HAPPY MAIL – my mom was with me and laughed.
No matter how old you are, getting mail is always fun

I think sending snail mail is VERY important in our lives and in our businesses. Notes can encourage like nothing else. I just wrote a facebook post about this and a blogpost about this a little while ago (but that one was more for business relationship – so important to show love and care.)
It’s an easy way to show love and care and every single one of us can and should do it Amy. You are absolutely correct.

What a fun way to make a walk to the mailbox special! Even in the old days when snail mail was not so unusual, it was still such a thrill to get a letter from my pen pal! I think I just may try this. It’s scary to commit to it because I feel so swamped already, but so does everyone. That’s why a hand written letter today is extra special! These days people don’t even want to text, but respond with an emoji! Thanks for this post.
Oh my goodness Linda! You are soooo correct! Even a text is too much for some these days….
It is always a thrill to get those letters! I’m hoping more people will be inspired

I love writing letters and receiving them. I always treasure them and any cards I get over the years.
They are treasured thoughts and memories, great reminders and keepsakes.
I keep my cards and letter too Ally. They are really neat to go back through, remind you of past friendships, even a great way to remind yourself to pray for someone

This is so fun! I absolutely love snail mail and I have piles of cards at home. I’ve lately been thinking about the need to send cards to say hi and especially thank you. I’m always good at sending thank you cards for gifts, but I’ve been thinking about those things people do that may not give you something tangible. I think everyone loves getting mail!
I always send thank you’s. always. and if I forgot if I did it or not, I’ll send another because 2 are better than none.

I always love getting letters in the mail. The genuine authenticity is SO much more valuable. You can hand onto those things forever. I have a greater determination to send hand-written letters more now.
I love that! Genuine authenticity – so true! so real! I’m not artsy but you should check out the artsy letters on instagram or even twitter using #snailmail – amazing.

I am apart of a Scripture Exchange from all over the nation and I LOVE when I get a letter from a stranger with a Scripture they wanted to share. It’s all random and we never know each month who has us and vice versa. Before “Back in the day” snail mail was like that and an email was exciting. My how times have changed.
that sounds like a really cool group to be part of!

Yes I agree letters and cards are the best because our time is put in them and it’s great to get something besides bills!
so much fun to get something cute that’s not bills or junk mail Mihaela!!

You are so right! Letters are like a hug in the mail. I was just thinking about how wonderful it wold be to start mailing handwritten messages to loved ones again. It’s so personable. I love that you do this!
Those that you send them to Brittney will love it for sure!

I love this. I try to send things to people in the mail all the time. My church still does a card ministry for these very reasons. It really does make a difference.

#2 is what sticks out to me the most. I love going through old letters from family members and seeing a piece of their lives that I might not otherwise have known.
So true Kristi. Especially if it’s in their handwriting and not typed. A priceless treasure for sure

I LOVE getting snail mail. I have a large collection of stationery from when I was an RA in college (over 10 year ago now) that I need to use. I guess I should use it for more than just those Christmas notes. 😀
you absolutely should Jess. It’s hard to find stationary these days now. It’s just cards or regular paper. We will be having a post soon about needing volunteers to write to sjc children we encourage, maybe that would be a good way to use some of it. 🙂

I think I need to rekindle this habit of writing notes and cards the “snail mail way”!

I’m going to be doing the same in 2017. I’ll have a post soon about needing volunteers to write to our SJC children. I’m excited about this future ministry.
