10,000 Steps
Do you realize how much 10,000 steps really are? I mean seriously… unless you are walking on purpose, the normal person may not even do half that in a day. I don’t want to depress you but studies show that most of us only get in about 3,000 a day.
Everywhere I go I see people with FitBits and step trackers. It can really be an eye opener if you’ve never used one.
So how does the everyday average person get in their 10k or even 12k steps a day? Here are a few suggestions:
- Park as far away from the entrance as possible
- Walk on your 15 minute breaks at work
- Take an evening stroll with your bestie or spouse
- Walk down every aisle at the grocery store
- Walk while you are on the phone (don’t just stand still)
- Take the stairs when possible
- Find a local trail and enjoy the outdoors
- Walk at the mall if the weather is bad
- Take time to clean up your street
- Walk beside of the ocean *my personal favorite
- Play Tennis
- Walk your cart back to the front of the store
- Walk around the field while your child is at practice
- Set an alarm and get away from your desk on purpose every few hours
- Watching your favorite TV show? Walk during the commercial
- Explore your city. Walk downtown (or uptown)
- Don’t man handle those bags of groceries. Carry in one bag at a time
- Use the bathroom that is the farthest away
- Stop using the drive thru and walk in to place and pick up your order
- Eat lunch outdoors and walk after you’ve finished eating
- Walk your dog a few times a day
Are you stuck at the 3,000-5,000 steps range? Set a goal to add in 300-500 steps a day.
How do you get in those extra steps? Do you use a FitBit to track them? Can’t afford a fitbit? Use your smart phone and download the My Fitness App and it will track your steps for you.
Have an iphone? Then you are already tracking your steps with this built in app. Go ahead…click it!

These are great tips. Sometimes the idea of 10,000 steps is overwhelming for people. I like that you gave 21 different ways to add the steps into our days. I work a very sedentary job, so I try to get up every hour and take a short walk.
I am a bit addicted to my FitBit:-) It really helps to motivate me to get to 10,000 every day.
Thanks for sharing!

What a thoughtful list! #5 and 6 seem like the easiest to implement so I’m going to start with those. I’m always looking for sneaky ways to get some exercise in, thanks for a great read!

I only wear my fitbit on days when I’m going to add on walking. I don’t think it’s fair to count my usual daily steps. If I just walk 30 min each way to the gym I reach my goal of 10,000 steps. Does the myfitnessapp use your data to track your steps?
Oh my gosh I’m doing a 10,000 steps challenge for thirty days right now! And if I miss a day I have to start all over. There are many times I’d get up and run in place to get to 10,000.
Such great tips. I am up on my feet all day chasing after 4 very active children and by the end of the day when I look at my FtiBit I am sure I have walked a billion steps only to find me a good 2000 steps away from my goal. It can be so frustrating to feel like I am moving all day and getting NO WHERE. Thanks for the suggestions and the reminder that I need to be more intentional about my walking.
So many great ideas. I just got an activity tracker, so I’m anxious to see how I do on average. I’m sure I’ll need to do quite a few of these.
What a great idea – i’m starting to walk more now 🙂
I am working on getting healthier and getting in more steps a day-thank you for these tips!
not only are all these great tips, i think #9 and #18 are just way too cute! love your ingenuity ! <3
What wonderful ideas to get more steps in a day, Marie! You even made me smile! I have been trying to work on this and recently started incorporating at least taking two walks a day. 🙂 Was debating about a fit bit as well…we’ll see about that for sure. Thanks for the inspiration to walk more and keep spreading JOY too!
Great tips! I NEED to do this! It’s tough because I work 10 hour days at a desk and have a 2 hour round trip commute. But I usually have three day weekends, so even if I could just get my 10,000 on those days it would be an improvement.
I gotta aim for that.
