Story:
A deeply religious man lived in a house by the river, but one day the banks burst and the house was flooded. As the water level rose alarmingly, the man climbed onto the roof of the house. A Boat came by. “Climb aboard.” called the captain. “No, I shall stay here,” said the man. “God will take care of me.” Twenty minutes later, the waters sill rising, the man climbed onto the chimney. Another boat came past. “Jump aboard,” said the captain. “No, I shall stay here,” said the man. “God will take care of me.” With the water up to the man’s waist, a helicopter suddenly swooped down. “Quick!” shouted the pilot. “Climb aboard!”
“No, I shall stay here,” said the man. “God will take care of me.” The water level continued to rise, soon the man was swept away from the chimney and drowned. Up in heaven, he sought out God. “I thought you said you would take care of me,” he complained. God said, “I sent you two boats and a helicopter. What more do you want?”
Do you have any questions for me? If so, please ask away.
Group discussion questions:
1. Have you tried to read the Bible in its entirety? Did you make it? How long did it take?
2. What challenges did you face? If you didn’t get all the way through, how far did you get?
3. What is the biggest challenge you are facing in this study (if any)?
4. What have you found rewarding so far in your attempts to read the Bible regularly?
5. If you’ve started to read through the entire Bible but have never finished it, what has kept you from finishing your goal?
6. What excites you most about the prospect of reading the entire Bible in 90 days?
7. Why do you believe it is important to read the entire Bible? What do you expect to discover in terms of practical living, spiritual growth, knowledge of history or other areas?
Reading Tips:
- You’ll be reading the Bible on your own. Set your schedule and plan to read each day. In 90 days, you’ll have accomplished your goal.
- We’ll meet here on the blog post and discuss anything you need to cover. I don’t claim to have all the answers, but we will find them together if need be. I’m hoping that as others chime in and discuss what they read, that any questions will be answered that way.
- Try to read at different times to see what works best for you. Most of all, do not give up – even if you fall behind.
Understand what you can while reading, but remember – different things will “jump out” at you at different times.
Books you’ll encounter this week:
Genesis – The adventure begins. Creation of the universe and all things in it.
Exodus – Slavery and the deliverance from Egypt.
If it’s helpful to do so, print out this page, put it in your Bible and check off the schedule as you go along. Jot down some notes highlighting what you’ve read. Any knowledge gained, verses that spoke to you or just favorite passages.
Leave any comments, questions and items you’d like to discuss below. Also, please do take time to answer the discussion questions. You never know how you’ll encourage someone to keep going after their goal!
If you are replying to someone, please include their name. If you are on twitter, please leave your twitter name, so others can follow you. I love getting to know others this way!
{{HUGS}} yall, let’s do this!

It never fails, you start something “public” and things go wrong right off the bat. Not being doubting Thomas or anything, but I’ve come to expect this. Just being honest with you. Myplan was to read 3 pgs in the morning, at lunch, afternoon and 3 at night – giving me my 12 pgs to complete this challenge EASILY. The morning started out normal enough, me slapping the alarm clock… daring it to sound again. *giggling* ok..so i wasn’t actually that grumpy. But, things happened and it didn’t work out. I’m typing this, knowing that i’m on chapter 11 and need to read thru chapt 15 in Genesis. & its 10:15 pm. So, what i’m tell in you is, don’t give up. Don’t. even if you miss it completely today, catch up. Answering questions… #1&2 I’ve read thru the Bible before in about a years time, but this year I’ve tried to read thru in 90 days and failed. I just gave up, but not this time. #3 – time. plain n simple. w/full time job, 2 college courses, Spreading Joy, 2 kids, hubby, house, 2 dogs…you get the picture. BUT this is IMPORTANT – it needs to take first place.
#4&6 – I’m excited about making it thru in 90 days..and doing it every 90 days thereafter. Can you imagine reading thru the Bible 4 times a year and how that wisdom can be used?? WOW
#7 as we grow &go thru different storms, different passages will speak louder, clearer and stick with us more. Hiding Gods word in our hearts is the best thing to keep us schooched all the way up close to God’s heart! I want to be right there…a heart beat away. [nodding]
So, that is where I am. I hope as you progress through the week you’ll be loving it. oh.. some thought from when i was reading today… Love the scenes from creation. Can you imagine God stepping out everyday and speaking this majestic world into existence? And then…creating us in HIS image. I love that.
Have you ever wondered at just how smart Adam was – he named every single creature we know…every one of them. I mean…really – porcupine?
I love that us gals are made “from” man, to serve side by side. That is awesome.

Wow, these are goals I think I will try too. I don’t usually do that, but I believe the Lord has inspiried me to read through the Bible every 90 days also. I wouldn’t worry about posting a note here. I feel bad that you were doing that instead of reading. I hope you didn’t feel that we needed to hear from you. I, for one anyway, could have waited 😀
Thanks for this! I was just showing how when you set a huge goal, such as this, how quickly things can go wrong. On Saturday I’ll be posting some thoughts on what I read and hopefully everyone grabbed the free study guide for this week – had some amazing truths there – especially about faith. Glad you are with me on this journey. {{HUGS}}
@spreadingJOY
Though Jacob would have known of God’s promise to make his generations as much as the “sands of the sea” it didn’t stop him or him mom from trying to force God’s hand early from their own efforts. I identify with this because I hate waiting, I HATE waiting.
For me, it’s choosing against my very nature of impatience that holds real freedom for me, because I cannot accomplish it in and of myself. I need God to break through my impatience and feel that emptiness with his timing.
In our Burger King society, its not only “have it your way” but HURRY UP too! I like to think that as we wait, our faith has no choice but to grow and that waiting is like watering. But – I don’t wait so well either. I’m glad that while we are in God’s waiting room, there are many others waiting, praying, laughing and encouraging us along. On the free study guide linked above it has 3 things about faith –
1. Fear needs security. Faith takes risk. Gen 12:1-3
2. Worry wants predictability. Faith loves hope. Gen 15:1-6
3. Self-reliance holds tight. Faith lets go. Gen 22:1-14
It’s not always easy (don’t we know it!!) – but always worth the wait.
Key Concepts:
– The covenant is God’s program of revelation
– The focus of creation is the establishment and maintenance of order and operation
– The stories in the Bible are stories about God
Key Teachings about God:
– God Established and maintains order in the cosmos
– God overcomes obstacles to carry out his purposes.
– God reveals himself to his people.
– God’s grace exceeds all logic.
Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that faith is hoping and believing – even when we can’t see or even understand.
Thoughts – from the Study guide:
1. Fear needs security; Faith takes risks. Gen 12:1-3
a. The strongest faith develops when faith is placed in something strong. Place your faith in God’s promises
b. The journey of faith often doesn’t have a map and may not even have a clear destination.
c. It takes faith to take risks
d. It takes faith to NOT be the one in control
e. It takes faith to keep going when you’ve lost what makes you feel secure
f. It takes faith to stake your life on something you can’t see or prove
2. Worry wants predictability; Faith loves hope. Gen 15:1-6
a. Abraham was a worrier – worried cause God had been silent for years
b. Worried cause The plans he had weren’t working out the way he thought they would
c. Worried cause the plans he had weren’t happening on his timetable
d. Worried cause he didn’t think his health would hold up long enough to see his dream come true
3. Self-Reliance holds on tight; Faith lets go
a. Faith gets tested, and tests do not get announced
b. Faith in God cancels out faith in oneself
c. Faith in oneself cancels out faith in God
d. It takes faith to let go of what you normally rely on
e. It takes faith to give up what it took you a long time to obtain
f. It takes faith to believe in miracles
We are like Abraham – on a journey of faith. Is God asking you to Go, Wait or Let Go?
Joshua 1:9 reminds us that God will be with us… not to be afraid. That is where we get our strength and courage from when we are waiting.
I believe the Lord has inspired me to read through the Bible in 90 days. It hadn’t occurred to me to do so EVERY 90 days but the idea intrigues me and I can certainly see the value in doing so. Thank you for that thought.
We had a death in the family (my uncle) so I will be doing some catch-up reading this weekend.
mcProdigal I so relate to what you posted! I’m a very impatient waiter. Only with Gods help can I overcome my impatience.
Wow, I am a little behind, but I will catch up soon. I love doing this! I’ll wait to read the study guide until after the week’s reading, as it was directed. I won’t make anymore comment right now abt the readings except that it is so good to read God’s Word and I hear him well…that’s awesome..no?
Group discussion questions:
1. Have you tried to read the Bible in its entirety? Did you make it? How long did it take?
I actually tried to read through the Bible in 90 days last year. My husband and I were doing it together, but I only got through Daniel. I definitely intend to stick to it this time and finish what I started!
2. What challenges did you face? If you didn’t get all the way through, how far did you get?
I think my biggest challenge was consistency and setting aside time to read everyday. Now, I get up early before everyone else and do my reading in the quiet of the morning. That is the perfect time to spend with God.
3. What is the biggest challenge you are facing in this study (if any)?
So far, none…?
4. What have you found rewarding so far in your attempts to read the Bible regularly?
I have found that when I read the Bible regularly I am more in tune with God and what He is speaking to me. I have a closeness with God and I am able to hear more clearly.
5. If you’ve started to read through the entire Bible but have never finished it, what has kept you from finishing your goal?
I don’t know. I guess I have just not been disciplined enough in the past. But, this time I have made it a priority and have set aside a specific time each day to read.
6. What excites you most about the prospect of reading the entire Bible in 90 days?
Just getting to see what God will show me. Each time I read the Bible, I see something differently. I new story will pop out at me, or a new lesson I never realized before. Really quite cool!
7. Why do you believe it is important to read the entire Bible? What do you expect to discover in terms of practical living, spiritual growth, knowledge of history or other areas?
I think it is important to read all of God’s word. It is alive and breathing and everytime you open your Bible, God reveals a little bit more of the story and his great love for us. I think He has something to show me during the next 90 days and I cannot wait to see what it is!
Thank you!!
for me, i was feeling guilty at first for not finishing in the 90 days -but – i figure if i finish in 120 days…then..truly – how bad is that? I’m excited that you are doing this journey and praying that things will go smoothly for you.
i’m with you about how new things come to light at different times. love love love that.
Enjoy and keep seeking/growing and let me know if there is anything that I can do to help in any way at all.
@spreadingJOY
I did this about 3 yrs. ago and it was fulfilling. I did it alone before so now I’m looking forward to doing it with others so we can talk & share.
My biggest challenge this time around is time. Now I work so I don’t have much free time.
